Athena Sandoval, an orphan who only has her aunt as her remaining family, became pregnant at the young age of eighteen by a man named Zachariah Elliott Montero. She was working as a waitress in a bar when she met the young man. Due to his extreme drunkenness, Zachariah only realized what had happened between them when he saw the girl—whom he had secretly admired for a long time—lying beside him the next morning. That night resulted in the birth of a little angel who would change Athena's life forever. Years later, their paths crossed once again. But Athena had no idea that the father of her child had become one of the wealthiest men in the world. Will she tell him about their child, or will she choose to keep it a secret? And when the truth is revealed, will she be able to forgive Zachariah once she finds out about the good things he has done for her?
View MoreI didn’t feel like getting up—I was too lazy to go to school. It was already seven in the morning, and I hadn’t even started getting ready. I don’t know, I just felt so unmotivated today.
I’m only in second year high school, but here I am, already being lazy. It’s not that I hate studying—my quiz and exam scores are always high, and I consistently do well in recitations and projects too. But sometimes, laziness just gets the better of me.
"Ugh, so tiring," I muttered to myself, finally deciding to get out of bed. I grabbed my towel and headed to the bathroom to take a shower.
I let out a deep sigh, in the end, I’m still going to school anyway.
"Dear, Athena."
That was Aunt Rosa’s voice, my mom’s sister who raised me ever since my mom passed away.
I was about to take a shower, but that didn’t happen. I was holding a bucket of water when I heard her enter my room. What could she possibly need?
"Yes, Auntie? I’m in the bathroom. Is there something you need?" I called out from inside. I even heard her laugh at what I said.
"Someone sent flowers and chocolates for you," she said, which completely shocked me.
Flowers? Chocolates? Who could they be from? I don’t have any suitors, and definitely no boyfriend."Do you have a boyfriend now? Oh my, Athena, your mom would rise from her grave if she found out you have a boyfriend," Auntie continued, joking around. She really knows how to tease, what if what she said actually came true? I hope not, and besides, that's not even on my mind right now.
"Auntie, I don’t have a boyfriend, you know I’m all about studying first, right? Besides, are you sure my name is on them?" I asked, lowering the bucket I was holding.
"Yes, it says Athena Sandoval. You might’ve forgotten your own name," she replied, making me laugh. "Even though my eyes aren’t what they used to be, I can still read small letters. I didn’t make a mistake reading that,” she continued.
"Alright, thank you, Auntie. Are you leaving?" I asked, giving in since what she said was true.
"Yes, I’m heading to work now. You can check downstairs after you’re done. And make sure you eat before you leave. I’m going now, take care, okay?"
"Yes, you too, Auntie." And I heard the door close. Suddenly, I couldn’t help but wonder, who would be interested in sending me flowers and chocolates? Could it be another prank from someone?
Out of curiosity, I finished my shower in less than ten minutes. Normally, it takes me around 20-30 minutes to shower, but today I was quick—probably because of the flowers and chocolates from someone I didn’t even know.
After I got dressed, I quickly went downstairs and headed to the living room. And there, I saw a bouquet of tulips and two boxes of chocolates.
Oh my God, how does he know that tulips are my favorite flowers?
"To: Athena Sandoval, From: Mr. Z. These flowers symbolize your sweetest and brightest smile the first time I saw you. I hope you like it, my Athena."
I was stunned after reading the small note. I don’t know why, but my heart was pounding in a way I’ve never felt before. And I’ve never felt this way in my whole life.
Mr. Z? Who is this? Do I even know him?
I walked into school in a daze. This was the effect on me after reading that note. It wouldn’t leave my mind no matter what I did.
"Happy Valentine's Day, Miss Rhea."
"Happy Valentine's Day, Zandra." "Happy Valentine's Day, everyone."Those were the kinds of phrases I heard around me. To be honest, they were kind of painful to hear, but I just ignored them and continued walking.
It was Valentine’s Day, after all—everyone seemed to be in love, but there were some like me who were bitter and without a partner. But no matter what, we all kept going with our lives.
"Hey! Athena Sandoval."
I stopped walking and turned toward the direction of the voice. It was my friend’s voice. This crazy girl actually said my full name.
Vanessa Agustin, my friend since childhood up to now.
"Are you okay? I’ve been calling you for a while, but you weren’t even listening," she said, her voice mixed with a bit of irritation. I shook my head in response and sighed, which made her even more confused.
"Do I know a guy whose name starts with the letter Z?" I asked. She didn’t answer right away, but she seemed to think about it.
"As far as I know, no. Why do you ask? Did someone send you a letter or, I don’t know, a death threat?" she replied, but I immediately hit her on the shoulder for saying that. This girl is crazy! I really don’t know why I’m still friends with her.
I ignored her and continued walking again.
"Hey, I’m just joking! You’re so serious," she said as she caught up with me, slinging her arm around my shoulder. "What’s going on? Why did you ask about that?" she asked curiously.
"Someone sent me flowers and chocolates earlier from a guy I don’t even know," I replied, causing her to stop in her tracks."Who sent them?" she asked, surprised.
"I don’t know either, it just says Mr. Z on the note," I answered.
"Are you sure the flowers and chocolates were really for you?"
"Is there another Athena Sandoval around our place? Isn’t it just me?"
"You’re right, I guess," she agreed. Ugh, this girl is really crazy. "But who could it be? I mean, there are guys who introduce themselves to you, but as far as I can remember, I haven’t met anyone whose name starts with Z. Could it be a schoolmate, or someone from another school?" she added.
"That seems unlikely to happen, but whatever, I’ll meet him eventually," I replied as we headed to our classroom.
When we entered, everyone was busy, each doing their part for the event later, while others were swooning over the flowers and chocolates they received. I just shook my head and walked over to my table.
"Oh? Who’s this from?"
Oh my gosh, another bouquet.
Impossible, I can't believe what I just found out.How could it be Alexander? W-Why? I don’t know, it’s all so confusing, I’m so confused.“Are you sure, son, that it was really him who gave that?” I asked while looking in Alexander’s direction.“Yes, Mommy, I clearly remember him. It was really him, Mommy,” Aaron answered with certainty. He seems to be telling the truth, and I don’t think he has any reason to lie to me.“Why, Mommy? Do you know him?” Aaron asked, which left me speechless. What should I say? Should I tell him the truth?“I-I don’t know him, son. Let’s go,” I replied, taking his hand again. We started walking toward the elevator, but I did everything I could to avoid being seen by Alexander. I didn’t want him to see my son, and I didn’t want him to find out that Aaron is my child. I wanted to talk to him and ask how he met my son. But maybe now isn’t the right time or place to bring it up, especially with Aaron here.“Mommy, why are we taking this elevator?” Aaron aske
“I-I’m sorry, sorry for the disturbance,” I said, quickly closing the door. I left and headed straight to the restroom.I didn’t expect to find that scene in his office. I had no idea Lauren was in his company. And what happened there—I never expected it. I know Lauren is his fiancée, but the way he treated her yesterday, you wouldn’t think they were in a relationship. When I got to the restroom, I immediately went into a vacant cubicle and slammed the door shut. I didn’t know what was happening to me, but I felt a sudden ache in my chest.“Athena, calm down. You shouldn’t be hurt by what you saw,” I told myself, letting out a deep sigh. This isn’t right. I shouldn’t be feeling this pain, because I don’t like him and I never will like the person who ruined my life.I stepped out of the cubicle after 20 minutes. Yes, I was in there for 20 whole minutes just trying to calm myself down. After washing my face, I immediately left the restroom.“Oh! A big man!” I exclaimed in surprise.Good
"Now, tell me. Why you're crying earlier?"I didn’t answer and instead moved a little away from him. Does he really have to ask that—even here in the elevator?"Miss Sandoval—""Sir, I'm okay. You don’t need to worry. Your brother didn’t do anything wrong to me," I cut him off, though there was a hint of irritation in my voice."That was the first time I saw you crying," he said."And it’s not for you to worry about," I replied directly, which left him silent.Suddenly, the elevator stopped and the doors opened—but it turned out there were just people getting in. About five of them entered. Most of them were talking among themselves, so they didn’t even notice Sir Zach’s presence inside."Did you see what happened earlier in the lobby?" said a woman with short hair. Two women and three men had entered the elevator. Judging by their IDs and conversations, I assumed they were from the Finance Department. I had once shared an elevator ride with one of the guys before."Oh, you mean what
"I'm sorry for what happened earlier," said Sir Zach.I'm still here in his office. I didn’t leave because he said he had something for me to do. I don’t know what it is, but I think it’s about fixing his internet connection again. Ugh, endless fixing.“It’s okay, I understand,” I said as I sat on the sofa. He went back to his seat at his table, but I noticed he loosened his necktie. It was clear he was stressed about what happened earlier."You weren't supposed to hear that. I should have called you in once he left. You even witnessed that confrontation between us.”It was obvious he regretted calling me in when his brother was still here. But if I hadn’t come, I wouldn’t have found out that Zander is actually his brother."I-It’s okay, sir, I understand. I just didn’t expect you two to talk about something like that. I shouldn’t have heard it. I’m sorry—""You don't need to apologize. I should be the one to do that," he cut me off. I just gave him a small smile and quickly looked aw
I couldn't believe that Sir Zach actually had a sibling because I thought he was the only child of the Montero family, but it turns out he wasn't. But who could the sibling be? Could they be here right now, which is why they're talking about it?I became curious about who that person was. Suddenly, everything I learned yesterday slipped my mind, and I became more interested in finding out who they're referring to as his sibling. After making my coffee, I left the pantry and headed back to the office to start working. But then I realized, it's the end of August today, and tomorrow will start a new month. The family day event is also coming up soon."Athena..." I immediately looked up when someone called my name. It was just Miss Lena."Yes, Miss Lena? Do you need something from me?" I asked as she approached my direction."Sir Zach is calling for you in his office, ASAP," she said, which surprised me.Has his board meeting finished already? It's still early to be seeing him today."Ah,
He frowned at what I said. It was strange, but I just ignored it. I avoided looking at him and went to the counter to pay. I didn’t care anymore about whatever he did. Even if he told Sir Zach, I didn’t care. That man would find out about me and my child sooner or later.“Let’s talk, Athena.” And suddenly, he pulled me away from the counter. What does this guy still want from me? I didn’t want to explain myself to him, but he still wanted to talk.“What is it?! Let go of me. What do you want from me?” I struggled to get free.People inside the supermarket started staring at us, but it seemed like this guy didn’t care. He just kept walking, dragging me with him until we were completely out of the exit. Only then did he release me."Why did you bring me here? And what are we going to talk about?" I said, annoyed, but he only responded with a serious look.“What did you mean earlier? What did you mean break?” he asked, confused, but I didn’t answer him.How could he not know about it? He
