"You take me for a fool?” He yelled, gripping my arms tightly, his fingers making sure to leave marks. “I would never lie about something of utmost importance, Diego”, I tried to convince him while earnestly trying to save myself from his strong grip. “No one dares to look me in the face and lie.” He said while gripping my arms more strongly than ever. “Yet, you stand here, lying to my face. You want to use me against my father as your revenge, isn't that right Adriana?” With that, he let go of my arms, shoving me aside angrily—whilst I hit my head against a door frame. _______________ A strong-willed yet vulnerable young lady from a mafia family finds herself stuck in a marriage with a rival heir arranged by both families as a means to stop bloodshed among them. “WHAT?” I screamed. I couldn't understand why my father would arrange such a thing without my approval first. “I will never marry him, Dad!”. I said, filled with anger and hoping for him to change his mind. “I know that you despise that family and mafia as a whole, but I am doing this for your own good”, my dad replied. I didn't like his tone; he sounded genuinely concerned about me which was rare coming from him. “I raised you as a single dad, but now that you have grown, I need to be reassured that you are safe and in good hands. “Good hands?”. That word felt wrong to me. They are a mafia family and our worst rivals. How could I ever feel safe in their so-called hands? My tone sounded sarcastic but I didn't care. I didn't want to reason with my dad; it felt futile. “I am doing this to stop bloodshed among us and keep you safe” he continued, trying to convince me. These explanations weakened me the more. “I have arranged the marriage and you will get married to him. It is final”. Before I could say anything, he finalized his words; his tone stern and authoritative. That tone was more like him. I stormed out of his office, still furious, unable to utter a word. All I could think about was a way to change my dad's mind. Nothing would ever make me marry into the Castillo family. As soon as I entered my bedroom, I picked up my phone and dialed Juan's number. He was the only person I could think of who might help change my father's mind. “Hey, Juan, how quickly can you get back to Mexico?”.I asked him, skipping our usual conversation and pleasantries. “Is everything alright?”I could feel his sudden worry, so I didn't want to add to it. “Just please get here before 8 a.m. tomorrow” was all I managed to say. I couldn't explain anything over the phone. His assurance after that meant everything to me but a small part of me still felt uneasy and uncertain about tomorrow. I lay down on my bed, trying to figure out a way out of my situation when memories began flooding back. I still remember that day vividly. I was just eleven years old, barely knowing much about how life or death was. My mum had been in the hospital for a week and my dad didn't want to tell me what was wrong with her. My driver was supposed to take me to see her after school, but I didn't make it in time. Diego had locked me inside my classroom when the school session ended. By the time a teacher found me and I reached the hospital, my mum had already died. “She waited a long time for you, dear, but she couldn't wait anymore.” That was all I could hear my dad say. I regretted not telling her goodbye or hugging her one last time, and it was all Diego's fault. Deep down inside, I wished I had never known Diego since childhood. I could never forget that painful memory, and I could never forgive him either. And now, I was being forced to marry him? I could never let that happen. “Shoot!” I exclaimed, as I got an urgent call and remembered my schedule. Diego's POV “What do you mean he escaped?”I glared at Rodrigo. “That fool knew we were coming and escaped the moment we got there. We couldn't do anything!.”Rodrigo said. I want him caught and brought to me by tomorrow noon. Do you hear me?” I glanced at Rodrigo and he nodded. “Diego, please calm down. They at least tried to catch him,” my best buddy Luis said, patting my shoulder. I glanced at him. “They still did a poor job by not catching him. I trained them very well, yet they haven't managed to capture a single guy in three days.” I was disappointed in them and I wanted it to be evident. “Diego, I have an important message from your father,” Luis said seriously while holding out his phone. I signaled for Rodrigo and the rest of my men to leave my office and they complied. Luis stepped closer to me and read the message on his phone. He then pulled out an envelope from his pocket and handed it to me, explaining that someone had delivered it. “WHAT?” I roared, standing up from my chair. My bodyguards standing near the entrance shook and I liked it. “Calm down, please,” Luis urged, but I was too angry to listen to him. “Why would my father do such a thing without my consent first?” I demanded, trying to get an understanding but failing. “Tell the driver to get the car ready now” I instructed Luis. He quickly went to follow my order. Without hesitation, I left my office and headed for the car. As I passed my men in the lobby, they all stared at me. “Gather as many men as possible. You must bring that man to me tomorrow, no matter what it takes.” I commanded, pointing at Rodrigo. “Yes, boss,” he replied, and I was satisfied. I left the building immediately, forgetting the envelope in my office. ||| “Mr. Diego, your father wants to see you in his office now,” one of the servants said immediately I entered the living room. “Wait here for me; I'll be back,” I told Luis before storming off. “What the hell dad!” I roared as I barged into his office. “I am sure you have heard the information clearly. You need to be ready for tomorrow.” He spoke casually but his words only made me angrier. “Is that all you have to say? Why did you arrange such a thing without my consent?” I was torn between anger and confusion. No matter what, I wasn't going to leave without a valid reason or answer. “You need to see this as a peace treaty to stop bloodshed among us. Besides, you are old enough to get married.” That was all he could say. I felt so enraged at the thought of marrying the daughter of my rival. “Couldn't you choose anyone other than the daughter of our rival?”I needed a more valid explanation. “Son, you will marry her tomorrow, if not for anything else, then for my sake.” With that, he ended our conversation and left his office. I am Diego Castillo, the most feared person in all mafia syndicates and here I am, being forced into something I didn't bargain for. I could never agree to this. “Where are you going, Diego?” Luis asked, concern evident in his voice as I exited the office and headed for the living room door. “You will not follow me,” I commanded, casting a quick glance at him. With that, I left for my car, wanting to drive alone. I sped beyond the driving limit, heading to an unknown destination. I didn't care.Adriana's POV I hurried into my room and shut the door, staring at the blood stains on my palms. Rushing to the bathroom, I scrubbed my hands vigorously, washing them as many times as possible until they became pale and spotless. My gasping had subsided, but I still needed my medicine. I retrieved two pills from the pack in my drawer and as I swallowed them, a sigh of relief escaped my lips.My phone rang again for the umpteenth time and the caller was still Juan. I declined the call once more and activated Do Not Disturb. Even in my shock, I had somehow managed to hear Juan say that he loved me and one thing I was sure of was that I had only ever thought of him as my elder brother.I lacked the courage to answer his call or express what I truly felt. Besides, I blamed the both of us for what happened today. If only we didn't go to Diego's office, he might not have been distracted or gotten shot. The chaos in the hallway jolted me from my thoughts. I stood in the corridor leading to
Adriana's POV The moment the gun was fired, I covered my ears with my hands and shut my eyes tight. I remained on the ground, eyes closed, when I began to hear someone shouting.I opened my eyes to see the boy struggling against Diego's men. “Let go of me,” he shouted, fighting back as three of Diego's men held him down and seized the gun. Rodrigo was about to pull the trigger when Diego intervened.“Just tie him up. I will kill him myself,” he muttered under his breath. “I swear, I'll give him the worst death possible,”Diego began gasping for air, and Rodrigo, along with few of his men, rushed over to him, applying pressure to his stomach.“Boss, you're bleeding profusely. You need to go to the hospital,” Rodrigo urged. But Diego shook his head defiantly, ordering them to take him home. He then turned to me, a faint smirk playing on his lips.My breathing became shallow as I remained on the floor, gasping and clutching my chest. Blood spilled from Diego's mouth, yet he continued to
Diego's POV I entered my office and shut the door, removing my suit jacket and hanging it on the hanger. I sat down, massaging my temples. I had not gotten that much drunk in a long time and so I was feeling off the previous night.I took out a stick of cigar from the pack of cigarettes brought out of my pants pocket and put the pack back in. Then I took out a lighter from my drawer and lit the cigar that was already in my mouth. I needed something to clear my head and the cigar always proved helpful.Minutes later, Rodrigo entered. “Boss,I've brought out the boys,”he said. I nodded.“Where is Luis? I haven't seen him since this morning,” I inquired.“He came in early this morning but said he had urgent work to do and would be back soon,” he replied.I took out the cigar from my mouth and released the smoke. “Alright, you can go ahead. I'll be there soon,” I said and he left. I took out my Derringer pistol from my drawer and left my office. At the centre of the compound, the boys wer
Adriana's POV I entered the living room stealthily, trying to avoid being noticed. However, my plan was foiled when I saw Juan talking to my dad. It had been a while since I’d last seen my dad and I was relieved to see him looking healthy and strong. Both my dad and Juan looked up as I stood near the door.“Adriana dear, I've missed you,” my dad said, standing up to come hug me. “It's been two and a half months since I last saw you and you didn't even bother to visit me,” he scolded.“My bad dad, I've been so busy,” I lied, trying to downplay the situation. The truth was I had been avoiding him because of my marriage to Diego.“It's alright dear, as long as you're enjoying your new home,” my dad said with a smile.I plastered a fake smile across my face and muttered “yes, sure.” Juan caught my eye and I saw him shaking his head in disappointment. I walked past my dad and went to Juan, grabbing his hand and heading to the balcony upstairs.“What are you doing?” Juan asked, pulling hi
Mr Antonio's POV A knock on my door disturbed me as I rested in my bedroom. “Who is it?” I questioned.“Sir it's Lucas speaking. Luis is here to see you,” Lucas replied. I got up from the bed, excitement coursing through me. Finally, I was going to hear good news after a long time. “I'll be down in a minute,” I replied.I went downstairs and met Luis sitting on a sofa, lost in thought. I approached him and gently touched his shoulder. “Luis, are you alright?”He shook slightly and looked up at me. “Yes, sir. I'm fine,” he replied calmly. I suggested we head to my office for privacy and a good talk. Luis agreed.“So, what brings you here?” I askedas we settled into my office. Luis seemed in a hurry, quickly searching through his phone.“Calm down, Luis. You don't have to rush,” I told him as he continued his search on the phone. He could take his time I didn't mind, as long as I could get some information regarding the Cruz syndicate.Luis sighed in relief and placed his phone on my
Diego's POV My dad quickly grabbed the phone from my hands and turned it off. His behaviour was unusual at that moment.“Just a syndicate seeking my help,” my dad replied casually.“Low-class syndicates like them—why do you bother helping them?” I asked. We had nothing to do with syndicates lower than ours because they gave us a bad reputation.“It's just this once; he needed my help. Don't bother about it,” he said and hurriedly went inside his house. It didn't matter to me, so I just drove off.|||I climbed up the stairs and headed for my room. My vision was vague, and I wobbled as I walked to my bedroom. I tried to open my room door but it wasn't budging so I subconsciously reached for a key in my pants pocket, unlocked the door and went in.“Who the hell are you?” I asked irritably when I stumbled upon someone on the floor beside the door. The person gasped and moved backward.“Get out of my room,” I said in a loud voice. The person immediately stood up and was about to run out
